Sustainability in Ground Handling: Our Transition to an Electric GSE Fleet

In aviation, sustainability is no longer just a long-term goal, but is increasingly being implemented in day-to-day operations.

At our FBO in Nice, DC Aviation G-OPS, sustainability shapes our mindset and our investments and is firmly embedded in our operations. Together with our joint venture partner G-OPS and Nice Côte d'Azur Airport, we have set ambitious environmental goals with a clear objective in mind: to achieve net-zero emissions by 2030.

The transition of our entire fleet of ground support equipment (GSE) represents one of the most significant milestones on this journey.

In recent months, DC Aviation G-OPS has invested in a new generation of electric equipment, replacing conventional combustion engines and fundamentally changing the way we work on the apron. Even though these vehicles often operate behind the scenes, they play a crucial role every day in reducing emissions, lowering noise levels, and improving operational efficiency.

Investing in the Future of Ground Operations

These vehicles are used all day long, whether they are transporting passengers, crew or baggage, performing aircraft maintenance, or handling aircraft movements.

In the past, much of this equipment relied on internal combustion engines. Today, we are proud to say that the ground handling fleet is now 100% electric.

A Modern Electric Fleet

Die neue elektrische GSE-Flotte von DC Aviation G-OPS umfasst nun:

  • 2 Towbarless Aircraft Tractors

  • 4 Passenger Steps

  • 2 Electric Ground Power Units (GPUs)

  • 3 Converters

  • 1 Clim/GPU Unit

  • 1 Electric Belt Loader

  • 1 Solar-powered and Electric Water Cart

  • 1 Solar-powered and Electric Toilet Service Cart

Together, these units support virtually every phase of the ground handling process while significantly reducing the environmental impact of daily operations.

Part of a Broader Sustainability Journey

The transition to electric GSE is part of a much broader sustainability strategy.

In recent years, DC Aviation G-OPS has also completed the transition of its entire van fleet to electric vehicles. Today, 16 fully electric vehicles support daily operations, including passenger and crew transport on the apron as well as baggage transport.

At the same time, operational documentation has been fully digitized, reducing paper consumption while increasing efficiency and transparency. In addition, measures to reduce single-use plastics have been introduced. These are being replaced wherever possible with reusable alternatives and glass containers.

    More Than an Investment

The renewal of our GSE fleet is more than just a fleet modernization. It reflects our commitment to responsible growth and continuous improvement.

As one of the busiest business aviation hubs on the French Riviera, DC Aviation G-OPS is aware of its responsibility to invest in solutions that benefit employees, guests, partners, and the environment within the company’s sphere of influence.

While significant progress has already been made, this is viewed as a step on an ongoing path of transformation.

After all, achieving net-zero emissions by 2030 will not be accomplished through a single initiative. It will be achieved through a multitude of improvements, investments, and decisions that, together, bring us closer to a more sustainable future for business aviation.
